Red flags to watch for

Six specific red flags that indicate a radar should not be trusted as a primary signal source:

Social posts frequently get details wrong, exaggerate capabilities, or refer to pre-release features. A radar that relies heavily on Twitter/X amplifies these errors.
  • No author or curator attribution. Anonymous curation with no named editors or stated expertise makes it impossible to assess judgment quality. Who decided this item was worth including? What's their background? Without attribution, there's no accountability.
  • Monetized entirely through affiliate links to the tools it covers. A radar where every recommendation links to an affiliate product has an economic incentive to feature tools regardless of quality. This does not mean affiliate links are disqualifying—but a radar where 80%+ of items link to monetized affiliates should be treated with skepticism.

How to test an AI radar before committing

Before making any radar your primary signal source, run three quick tests. Each takes under 10 minutes.

  1. The primary source test: Pick any 5 items from the radar at random. Click the source link on each. Does each link go directly to the original announcement, changelog, or official blog post? Or does it go to a news article, a tweet, or a secondary source? A radar that passes this test for 4 out of 5 items has acceptable source traceability. Failing 3+ means you cannot rely on it for verification.
  2. The deduplication test: Pick any major AI launch from the past week (e.g. a new model release or a significant API change from a major provider). Search the radar for that item. Does it appear once, with one canonical summary? Or does it appear 3+ times in different framings? When a radar is not enough

A weekly signal radar handles the "stay current" job well. It does not replace:

  • Deep-dive research: When you're making a major vendor selection or architectural decision, you need benchmarks, user interviews, cost modeling, and technical testing—not a weekly summary. Use the radar to identify the decision; use dedicated research to make it.
  • Real-time alerting: If your product has hard dependencies on specific APIs where any change could break production, a weekly scan is not enough. Set up provider-specific changelog subscriptions, GitHub watch notifications on key repos, or Slack integrations that push breaking changes immediately. A radar is not a pager.
  • Human curation teams for large organizations: At the scale of a 50+ person product org or an enterprise evaluating AI vendors, a single curated radar may not cover the necessary breadth and depth across all product lines. Dedicated research analysts, vendor management teams, and structured procurement processes add judgment that no automated or semi-automated radar can fully replace.
  • Competitive intelligence: A radar covers the AI ecosystem broadly; it doesn't specialize in tracking what specific competitors are shipping.
