AI Launches That Matter vs Launches That Don't: How to Tell

"Major AI launch" has been diluted. Every product update, research preview, and rebrand gets announced with the same urgency as a genuinely transformative release. Distinguishing what matters from what doesn't is now a core skill.

Four criteria

1. Primary source verifiable

Can you find the original announcement from the company or researcher—a blog post, changelog, or paper—not just secondary coverage? If every article about the launch cites other articles and you can't find an original source, it may not be a real launch.

2. Touches your stack or users

Even a technically significant launch is irrelevant noise if it doesn't intersect with your stack, your users' expectations, or your competitive landscape. Apply this filter first to cut irrelevant items quickly.

3. Technically distinct

Is this genuinely new capability, or is it marketing renaming an existing feature? A new model with a different architecture, a new context window size, or a new API endpoint is technically distinct. A "new product" that's the same API with a different UI is not.

4. Usable artifact exists

Is there something you can actually try today—an API endpoint, a downloadable model, an open repo, a product you can sign up for? Research previews and "coming soon" announcements are signals, not launches. Treat them differently.

Applying the criteria

A launch needs to meet 3 of 4 criteria to be worth acting on. Meeting all 4 makes it a strong candidate for your shortlist.

Summary

Evaluate AI launches on 4 criteria: primary source verifiable, touches your stack/users, technically distinct, usable artifact exists. 3 of 4 = worth shortlisting. Fewer than 3 = watch or ignore.
